Vance Thompson Vision’s biannual Symposium brings together optometrists from the surrounding region and provides them with the opportunity to earn continuing education credits while being inspired by the latest innovations in eye care.
Their Spring 2019 Symposium was made especially stellar by the appearance of former NASA astronaut Tim Kopra as the keynote speaker. To set the stage for the space-themed weekend, and to capture the attendee’s attention at the beginning of the event, we created a video that pairs together two professions that would seem to be unlikely companions: astronaut and eye care provider.
The Wonder of the Everyday
Our challenge was this: for a room full of eye doctors who have seen countless videos about eye care, how do you make a video about eye care feel fresh and exciting? To engage their sense of wonder, we sought to compare space exploration and eye surgery by emphasizing the epic beauty, scientific rigor, and sense of purpose shared by both disciplines.
Exploring Space and Vision
To that end, we wrote the script and worked with an editing partner to weave together interviews we filmed, clinic b-roll, NASA public domain footage, and stock footage to show how the cosmic nature of space relates to what these doctors do every single day by improving people’s vision. We were very pleased to see how it all came together—watch the entire video below:
